Don’t Crop Me Now: A Guide to Instagram’s Newest Update

If you haven’t heard about Instagram’s newest layout update, spoiler alert: squares are out!

When I first saw the update, I’ll admit—I panicked. My clients’ carefully curated feeds felt like they were crumbling before my eyes, and I wasn’t sure how I’d get them back to their “glory days” again. If you felt the same wave of confusion and frustration, you’re not alone. But don’t worry. I’ve done the deep dive so you don’t have to!

Let’s break down what’s changed, what hasn’t, and how to get your feeds back on track.

What’s the Deal with the 4:5 Grid?

Let’s start by setting the record straight about the so-called “4:5 grid.” The new preview size isn’t 4:5; it’s actually 3:4. Confused? Same. But here’s what you need to know:

  • The 3:4 preview size applies to both feed posts and reels. This means your content will be cropped slightly taller than a square when viewed on the main grid.

  • You can’t actually create 3:4 content because Instagram doesn’t allow that aspect ratio for posts. Classic Instagram logic.

What Should You Do?

  1. Stop Posting Squares! If you’re still creating content in the 1080x1080 format, it’s time to retire it. These images will be stretched on the feed, resulting in cut-off text or blocked faces.

  2. Switch to 4:5 Ratio (1080x1350 Pixels), the new gold standard for feed posts. This taller format not only looks better on the grid but also takes up more vertical space on the feed. This means your content is receiving more screen time in front of your audience.

  3. When designing your posts, optimize all images and text for the center square (1080x1080). This ensures your content looks great in the 3:4 preview (1015x1350) and for users who still see the old square layout.

  4. Instagram’s cropping isn’t always kind. To avoid important details getting cut off, leave extra space (a.k.a. padding) on the sides of your images and text.

What About Instagram Reels?

Reels still need to be created in the 9:16 ratio (1080x1920), but they now also have a 3:4 preview on the grid. Surprisingly, this is good news, because you’ll have more space to display text and graphics in the preview.

Your Old Feed Might Look Messy…

Here’s the part no one wants to hear: your old feed might look a little… off. If you’ve been posting a lot of square graphics with text, the new layout might crop them awkwardly. As hard as it may be, try to breathe and let it go.

Instead, embrace the change and start designing for the future! I’ve personally enjoyed the challenge of reimagining my old graphic templates and repurposing my most successful photos with a new crop.
