Myths You Shouldn't Believe About the Instagram Algorithm

We need to talk about the Instagram algorithm. And if just seeing the word “algorithm” freaks you out, we’re here to help!

Despite the mystery and conspiracy theories, the algorithm is not something to be feared. It turns out the key to growing on Instagram lies in understanding the algorithm, while not allowing it to dictate how you provide great content for your followers. That’s why we’re pulling the mask off to debunk the top Instagram algorithm myths we’ve heard.

  • Shadowbanning is NOT real. While some users claim that their posts are being systematically hidden, it is more likely that they are overusing super-popular hashtags, tagging people who are not in their posts, or leaving spammy comments. Remember, Instagram rewards genuine engagement over quick (but not strategic) solutions.

  • Using third-party post schedulers will NOT hinder you. In fact, Instagram has a public code available called API, which exists so that other – legitimate – apps can connect to Instagram and schedule posts. We use a platform called Sprout that actually helps us boost engagement and reach by planning content in advance and getting real-time feedback on what is working best for your brand!

  • Personal accounts are NOT favored over business accounts. Switching to a business account will not hurt your page’s performance. Instead, it will allow you to take full advantage of some game-changing benefits like insights, contact buttons, auto-publishing through partner apps, and the ability to create ads.

Our opinion? The algorithm shouldn’t be your focus at all (Jinkies!) Prioritize your audience and Instagram will prioritize you. Focus on creating unique, creative, and timely content that speaks to your customers, and engagement will come organically.
